So: Keep those bloody &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: verdana, sans-serif;"&gt;presentation slides lean and full of meaning!&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt; &lt;div&gt;As noted, this Sales25 discussion stems from a presentation that I made to salespeople at a major &lt;span style="font-family: verdana, sans-serif;"&gt;tech company. As part of my prep work, I reviewed some of their presentations. And I was&amp;#8230; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: verdana, sans-serif;"&gt;appalled. This is a company that peddles some great products. But each of their slides had way too &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: verdana, sans-serif;"&gt;much stuff on it.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;div&gt;Is it just my age? Am I just too old to see the fine print? No, damn it! The point of a presentation &lt;span style="font-family: verdana, sans-serif;"&gt;is to persuade&amp;#8230; not to perplex.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt; &lt;div&gt;&lt;b&gt;SETH SPEAKS – VERY BRIEFLY&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Consider the immortal words of Seth Godin:&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt; “If you can&amp;#8217;t describe your position in eight words or &lt;/i&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: verdana, sans-serif;"&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;i&gt;less, you don&amp;#8217;t have a position.”&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;b&gt;SLIDE RULES&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Don&amp;#8217;t let your slide show become a side-show. How can I get him or her promoted?”&lt;/div&gt; &lt;div&gt;It&amp;#8217;s not enough to focus on making the customer&amp;#8217;s &lt;i&gt;organization&lt;/i&gt; “successful.” Yes, that&amp;#8217;s clearly the long-term goal. And a potent “tool” in the relationship game is a kind word. In &lt;span style="font-family: verdana, sans-serif;"&gt;other words: a thank-you note.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt; &lt;div&gt;Thank-you notes. Send them by the truckload.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;div&gt;The note of appreciation to the “Big Guy” who made time on his calendar for you is one thing. And &lt;span style="font-family: verdana, sans-serif;"&gt;important. But more important over the long haul: notes to people several rungs down the ladder, &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: verdana, sans-serif;"&gt;people who went a “little bit out of their way” to advance your cause.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt; &lt;div&gt;Another rule of thumb: At least 50 percent of your thank-you notes should go to people inside your &lt;span style="font-family: verdana, sans-serif;"&gt;company - “unsung” people who help create better experiences (remember: that&amp;#8217;s what you&amp;#8217;re &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: verdana, sans-serif;"&gt;selling) for your customer.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;div&gt;Oh, and while I&amp;#8217;m at it: Remember birthdays. That is, if you &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: verdana, sans-serif;"&gt;are not exceedingly alert.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt; &lt;div&gt;Think Microsoft 20 years ago. Or Wal*Mart 20 years ago.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;div&gt;“Knowing the industry” means having good antennae out for the “little guys” that may not be little &lt;span style="font-family: verdana, sans-serif;"&gt;too much longer. Toward that end, make sure that your Extended Personal Network includes a few &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: verdana, sans-serif;"&gt;savvy venture capitalists who can feed you the “buzz” on what&amp;#8217;s coming next. (They may be wrong. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: verdana, sans-serif;"&gt;But they will be unfailingly interesting. And they will keep you in fighting trim.)&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt; &lt;div&gt;&lt;b&gt;IF YOU CAN&amp;#8217;T BEAT &amp;#8216;EM&amp;#8230;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Another option: Give those upstart competitors a break. Work with them.
