Partnership is key - sharing the “wealth” is a great motivator for INNOVATION. I am now focusing my energies on platforms, not on one-off applications, that wouldallow service providers and developers to launch their creations on the net and on the mobile without hassle of setting up things from scratch. We should all be building the highway and malls that would give them quick market access and hence, the shortest path to profitability.”

Excerpt from an interview with Mark Ruiz:

"…but from the very beginning, we never really saw the HAPINOY STORES to remain as ordinary sari-sari stores. Since a major thrust for Hapinoy is to grow the business of our micro-entrepreneur store owners—captured in our PATH TO PROSPERITY Program -  then we have to go beyond traditional business thinking in order to realize new revenue streams. And in a situation wherein commodity goods provide only commodity margins, then innovation and evolution will play a key part in our Hapinoy Store’s growth.”

RIP Steve

Steve Jobs was one of the biggest influences for us to start this blog, the HungryPeople blog. This blog was primarily about people who were ‘hungry’ for more ideas that can change the world. In memory of Steve Jobs’ passing today, we honor the man who inspired us to make a dent in the Universe.

How To Brand

If there is a top brand in the teaching of brand leadership, that’s Martin Roll.  In this interview, he shares with us insights into brand management and execution.

What’s the best way to create a Brand? Is it through the use of stories?

•   By creating experiences for customers

•   By ensuring that brands are woven in the daily fabric of your customers

•   By engaging customers through innovative brand activities

How does one company or one individual achieve Branding Excellence?

•   By implementing the three bullet points mentioned above.

What is the future of Branding?

•   Very strong given the need to create differentiation

•   Very global given the flattening of the world

•   Very Asian given the shifting of the global business headquarters and the new power structures

What’s the best book on Branding?

•   Asian Brand Strategy by Martin Roll

•   Strategic Brand Management by Kevin Lane Keller

•   Brand books by David Aaker – they are timeless and classics

Name us 3 Asian companies that have created global brands. Tell us briefly how they did it.

•   Singapore Airlines – Creating extraordinary brand experiences consistently

•   Samsung – Emphasizing quality and coolness factor in cutting edge designs

•   Toyota – Implementing customer orientation backed by top notch manufacturing

How has Social Media changed the media landscape? How has it affected Marketing and Branding campaigns?

•   Levelling of information asymmetry between companies and customers

•   Instant and constant flow of images, experiences and values of brands

•   Emergence of a sense of global brand communities

Which company has the best Branding turn-around story?

•   Samsung – From a huge, diversified conglomerate to an outstanding global iconic consumer electronics brand

Who are your personal heroes? Why?

•   Richard Branson – a great entrepreneur

•   Giorgio Armani – he build an iconic brand without compromising

What are you hungry for?

•   To help educate CEOs and corporate boardrooms the real and untapped values of creating global iconic brands

What would you like to see that more companies do in relation to Branding?

•   Elevate branding to a boardroom level and start to see branding as a strategic journey, and brands as assets

•   Have the CEO as the main brand ambassador – it does not happen often

•   Design company strategy with their brand identity as their guiding blueprint

•   Continuously invest in creating and nurturing brands to extract their inherent value

Aim to Change-the-Damn-World!

The last of Tom Peters’ Sales25 Principles is truly world-changing.

Your ultimate goal in life, as well as in Sales, should be to —-

Aim to Change-the-Damn-World!
Selling is… Cool. Very Cool. I really do believe, when I hawk my “wares” (when I present a seminar or write a book), that I’m doing more than buttering the bread and paying the property taxes. While I don’t think I routinely change the world for large numbers of people, I know that I give a damn about what I’m doing – that I’m excited about delivering my product-service-experience.

Note well this cri de coeur offered by Apple Computer boss Steve Jobs: “Let’s make a dent in the universe.”
I think the notion that selling can be… “universe-denting”… is what keeps us motivated, and able to look at ourselves in the mirror.

We are All Salespeople Now
Want to get my dander up? Try saying, “Hey, I’m a finance guy. I don’t ‘do’ sales.”

No! No! No!
Success = Sales Success.

Everywhere.
Period.

We’re all in sales.
All the time.

Posted via email from HungryPeople | Comment »

Keep Your Slides Simple

And we’re on to the last two of Tom Peters’ Sales25 Principles.  Here, he makes a strong case for simplicity - real design is simple.  When our plans are clear and simple, it is not only well understood but easier to execute as everyone is clear on what to do.

Keep Your Slides Simple.

If you’re in sales (and again, if you’re in the WOW Project Business, you’re in the Full-Time Sales Business), sooner or later you drag out Ye Old PowerPoint Presentation. So: Keep those bloody presentation slides lean and full of meaning!
As noted, this Sales25 discussion stems from a presentation that I made to salespeople at a major tech company. As part of my prep work, I reviewed some of their presentations. And I was… appalled. This is a company that peddles some great products. But each of their slides had way too much stuff on it.

Is it just my age? Am I just too old to see the fine print? No, damn it! The point of a presentation is to persuade… not to perplex.
SETH SPEAKS – VERY BRIEFLY
Consider the immortal words of Seth Godin: “If you can’t describe your position in eight words or less, you don’t have a position.”

SLIDE RULES
Don’t let your slide show become a side-show. Here are a few basics on keeping the pith in your pitch:
• Keep it clear.
• Keep it simple.
• Declare your benefits.
• State your case.
• Tell your (COMPELLING) “story.”
• Sit down.
• Shut up.

Make Your Customer a Hero
(photo from WorldTelecom)

This is my favorite among Tom Peters’ sales principles.  I couldn’t say it better than him.  It’s really the best way to succeed in life - make heroes of others.
Make Your Customer a Hero.

When you look across the table at your customer, think religiously and repeatedly to yourself: “How can I make this dude or dudette rich and famous? How can I get him or her promoted?”
It’s not enough to focus on making the customer’s organization “successful.” Yes, that’s clearly the long-term goal. But the practical, near-term imperative is to make a Solid Gold Hero (or Heroine) out of the Individual who is responsible for buying (and using) your product or service.

Consider: I am not in the “widget-selling business.” I am in the “Hero- (Heroine) Making Business.”
“Companies” don’t buy “things” from other “companies.” Rather: Individuals buy Successful Relationships from other Individuals.
